“We have a great deal to say about this, and it’s difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature — for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.”
Hebrews 5:11-14 HCSB
There is a lot in here, mostly about spiritual maturity and the need for milk before we can grow. But two things jumped out at me. The first being that once we are mature, we can distinguish between good and evil. We know what to stay away from once we are spiritually mature. The way I see it, we do not make excuses.
The second thing that jumped out at me is that the author is clearly saying that we do not become mature, not because of the righteous will of God, but because we are lazy. We do not take the time to become grounded in the word!!
